Meet Virginia Ritenour...

Virginia Ritenour, came to Clifton from the Shenandoah Valley in 1910 to be principal of Clifton High School - the first  high school in Fairfax County - which, in 1912, became Clifton School.

She married James U. Kincheloe, descendant of longtime Clifton-area settlers integrally responsible for settling this area of Fairfax County through Lord Fairfax's 1716 land grant to them of 1,000 acres.

Nestled on 36 acres of that Lord Fairfax deed in a quiet corner of CliftonVirginia's great-grandson, Kirk Wiles, owns Paradise Springs Winery, site of the first benefit sponsored by Friends of Community Schools to Save Clifton Elementary!

Virginia Heritage at Risk...

Motioned for closure by the Fairfax County School Board on July 8th
by Liz Bradsher, Springfield District School Board member, Clifton Elementary School has just been nominated to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for inclusion on the U.S. Department of Interior's National Register of Historic Places.

The submission nominates placing Clifton Elementary in the adjacent Historic District for the Town of Clifton as designated on the  National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places.

On the Cardinal Hill site in 1912, the current Clifton Elementary building was rebuilt to meet the needs of the greater Clifton community in 1953 ~ the school is getting ready to enter its 99th year, but has been an anchor for the community since 1869 in various buildings in or around the Clifton community.
